Charles Dickens: a man of letters. A great British writer Charles Dickens succeeded in showing feelings and thoughts of a child in his novels and short stories. Dickens’s own childhood began in a very little house near Portsmouth in 1812. As a child he got to know happiness with his family and unhappy years in London. At 15 he began to earn his living as an office boy. He wanted to become a journalist. He spent much time in the Reading Room of the British Museum educating himself. Later he used to say say that the time spent there was the most useful time of his life. Dickens became one of the best reporters of London.
