January is the coldest month of the year. It is in this month that the crackling frosts do not bypass us. The trees are thickly fringed with frost. The sun is bright, but not warm. The hard, dry snow crunches underfoot and creaks under the sledge runners. Smoke rises directly from the chimneys, around which jackdaws and crows are circling, seeking shelter in the warmth.
Even sparrows, accustomed to the cold, are almost invisible: they do not fly to the road or to the yard to peck at the grain, and if they do, they will jump, jump and soon disappear again somewhere. Poor birds are especially hard at this time; if the frost increases, they will freeze in earnest.
It is very joyful to look from the warm room at the courtyard covered with snow, lit by the bright sun. The snow is white and shiny, like sugar. It shines even more brightly on the streets, on the turns smoothed by runners. The shadows of the houses look blue in the bright light, and in the evening the ruts from the setting sun look orange, and the road is pinkish. Perhaps such bright colors – dazzling white, pale blue and pink-at other times and will not see in nature.
It is good to walk down the street at this time.. The frost is pleasantly tingling our cheeks, the air is fresh and clean
