Read this passage and do the exercise below.
Native Americans
The first people to live in a land are called indigenous peoples. Sometimes these peoples are referred to as Indians or American Indians. This is because when Columbus had first landed in America, he thought he had sailed all the way to the country of India.
Native Americans lived throughout North and South America. In the United States there were Native Americans in Alaska, Hawaii, and the mainland of the United States. In the middle of the country lived the Plains Indians, including tribes such as the Comanche and Arapaho. In the Southeast area of the country lived tribes such as the Cherokee and the Seminole.
The Native Americans were grouped into tribes or nations usually based on the area they lived in and their culture such as their religion, customs, and language. There were hundreds of tribes throughout the United States when Columbus first arrived. Many of them are well known such as the Cherokee, Apache, and the Navajo.

Сильное влияние на развитие района имело строительство железной дороги Ростов-Баку (в 1970-х). Она по самой густонаселенной предгорной полосе и в свою очередь еще большему её развитию и заселению. Вдоль этой дороги впоследствии были проложены автодорога, линии электропередач, нефтепровод, т.е. эта дорога стала главной осью развития района.
В годы первых пятилеток Северный Кавказ развивался как крупный район сельского хозяйства, сельскохозяйственного машиностроения и пищевой промышленности. В Ростове-на-Дону был построен крупнейший в мире завод сельскохозяйственного машиностроения « Ростельмаш», выпускавший многие виды машин. Продолжалось развитие Восточного Донбаса как угольно-металлургического района.
В Таганроге было создано Центральное конструкторское бюро морского самолетостроения, главным конструктором которого стал инженер Г.М. Бериев. Вместе со своим заводом сейчас составляют Таганрогский авиационный научно-технический комплекс им. Г.М. Бериева – центр проектирования и строительства гидросамолетов.
В республиках, бывших аграрными и менее развитыми, проводилась политика «подъема отсталых национальных окраин»: строились новые и развивались старые города – административные и культурные центры республик, промышленные предприятия, готовились кадры для преподавания на родном языке и т.д.
После Великой Отечественной войны продолжалось развитие района как агропромышленного, но росла и доля промышленности. Были построены крупные ГЭС – Цимлянская на Дону, Чиркейская на Сулаке (в Дагестане), завод азотных удобрений в Невинномысске, завод по производству электровозов в Новочеркасске, Ростовский вертолетный завод, ряд других крупных предприятий. Началась разработка вольфрамово-молибденовых руд в Кабардино-Балкарии, небольших месторождений нефти и газа в Ставропольском и Краснодарском краях.
2. Каковы особенности развития агропромышленного комплекса района?
Северный Кавказ – район высокоразвитого, интенсивного сельского хозяйства. Здесь сложился мощный многоотраслевой агропромышленный комплекс.
Многоотраслевое сельское хозяйство предопределило специализацию Северного Кавказа по продукции пищевой промышленности.
Особенностью района является развитие этих производств не только в городах, но и в сельских поселениях. Кроме того, на Северном Кавказе производят сельскохозяйственную технику, оборудование для перерабатывающих отраслей, минеральные удобрения.
