Russian folk music - the traditional music of the Russian people, is a part of Russian folk culture. Russian folk music is the basis on which all Russian professional music has grown.
The Russian musical culture of the oral tradition has a pronounced unity. The basis of the genre system is made up of labor tunes, choruses and songs, ritual folklore, epic genres, spiritual poetry, round dances and dances with songs, lyric songs of the peasant tradition, urban lyric songs, instrumental music.
Musical traditions differ in the ratio of genres, musical and poetic stylistics, and manner of performance. Generally speaking, local traditions can be grouped by region: western, northern, central, southern, Volga, Ural, Siberian. The geographic boundaries of local musical characteristics are flexible and subject to change.
