The Internet is very often (1)_ C. compared to a highway where we are free to explore in any direction without boundaries. But the freedom we can enjoy on the Net
(2)_ B. has also raised a large number of unexpected issues, such as the controversy surrounding MP3 files and websites like Napster. The MP3 format (3)_ B. has been used since the mid-90s and it enables users to store music in a compressed form on a computer. Napster (4)___ D. was created __ by Shawn Fanning and his friends in Boston in 1998. It was the first free website to help its users swap MP3 music files over the Net. Since it was forced to close down in 2001, a number of other similar sites like Gnutella or Kazaa have been created by Fanning’s successors, who are often labelled as hackers by their adversaries.
The activities of Fanning and his followers (5)_ A. have been interpreted in different ways over the years. Many believe record companies are right when they say that these websites have seriously violated copyright and individual property rights. Many of the creators of these homepages have been (6)_ B. sued and, as in Napster’s case, frequently with success. Others, however, (7)_ A. regard these “hackers” as freedom fighters of the digital age who just want to provide free music without worrying too much about copyright. This attitude then is criticized (8)_ C. in turn by people who are simply concerned about the ethical values of today’s young people. They worry that there is a whole generation that is growing up unable to see the difference between right and wrong.
I live in Rostov-on-Don. It is the administrative center of Southern Federal District. The population is estimated at about 1.1 million.
Our city is green and beautiful. There are many historic buildings in it. But there are also modern buildings and shopping malls.
Rostov-on-Don is an industrial city and a port. There are a lot of high-tech enterprises here, even a helicopter production plant. The unemployment rate is low.
Many tourists visit our city because there are many places of interest here: churches and temples, museums and galleries, monuments and fountains. Some of underground passages are decorated with mosaic.
My favorite museum is Laboratorium. It is an interactive science museum. One can touch exhibits and watch exciting chemistry experiments there.
If you want to spend a family weekend the best place is, in my opinion, the Park of Revolution. Swans, peacocks, crowned cranes live there. There are cafes and playgrounds. In 2016 65-meter Ferris Wheel Odno Nebo was built in this park.
Citizens obviously love pets, as we have such monuments as “Plumber with Cat”, “Merchant-Peddler and his Cat” and “Monument to veterinarian”.
In 2018 our city hosted several matches of FIFA World Cup. A huge stadium was built for this event.
As every big city Rostov-on-Don has some environmental problems. Air pollution is a typical problem, but we are also concerned about the quality of the drinking water.
Unfortunately our city still has no subway. But we hope that it will be built.
I love my native city very much.
