Beatrix Potter (British tales)
Have you read The Tale of Peter Rabbit? It's a very famous children's book written by
Beatrix Potter. Beatrix was born in 1866, She and her brother kept many small animals as
pets - rabbits, hedgehogs, guinea pigs, mice, frogs and even bats! They both liked to draw
their pets, but Beatrix liked drawing animals from her own imagination most. She also loved
exploring and drawing nature when they visited beautiful places like Scotland and the Lake
District.
Beatrix was very smart, and studied archaeological artefacts, fossils and insects, but she was
especially interested in mycology - the study of mushrooms!
To earn some money, Beatrix started drawing cards with animals. She liked writing and
illustrating letters too. One day, she wrote a letter to her friend's son, and told the story of
Peter Rabbit. She decided to make the story into a book. The Tale of Peter Rabbit was
published in 1902 - and it was a great success! She wrote, illustrated and published many
more books. She also created dolls, painting books, games and other items based on her
characters. In 1905, Beatrix bought a farm in the Lake District. She learned about farming
and bought more farms and land to help preserve the landscape. She enjoyed country life
very much, and was very active in protecting the environment. When Beatrix died, she left
almost all her farms and land to the National Trust, a charity which protects historic places
and landscapes. You can even visit Hill Top Farm today, which is exactly like it was when
Beatrix lived there! So if you haven't read The Tale of Peter Rabbit, or other Beatrix Potter
books, why not visit your local library or bookshop today!

Worldwide, about 10,000 zoos. The conditions vary greatly, with the worst being nothing more than specific prisons that contain very destitute unhappy animals. The best zoos try to recreate the natural environment, although completely this is never possible.

Zoos attract thousands of visitors every year, which allows people to see animals that they have never met before. A few lucky ones can go on a safari, but even then they will see the animals from a distance and, perhaps, just a short time. In addition, a trip to the zoo is much smaller than for the whole family on a safari. Of course, on television have a wildlife program, but they do not allow you to see the animals close. A visit to the zoo educates and entertains people with information about wildlife.

Cons of Zoos

When people visit zoos, they don’t see wild animals, but captive animals whose families still live in the wild. The conditions are artificial and do not allow animals to behave naturally. A cheetah cannot run at full speed, and chimpanzees cannot pick fruit high in the forest, as in their real houses. The truth is that these animals' natural habitats can never be recreated, no matter how hard the zoo tries. And many do not starayutsya.Esli zoo is such a luxurious place for animals, why life expectancy captive elephants, for example, less than their wild relatives? Disappointment, boredom, and loneliness play a role in their suffering and subsequent premature death.

Zoos are a business. They buy, sell and breed animals. When they buy them, they are not always worried about where they came from or the cruelty that was provided to them in their way. When they sell animals, it can be a zoo with terrible conditions or a laboratory where they will experiment on animals.

Nowadays everybody knows that people are very busy and don’t have much time to spare. Sometimes it’s only the weekend and I think that every day-off needs some special planning. The English say: "Who knows how to work, knows how to rest". I think it’s true. In my view rest is as important as work. So I try to treasure every hour and think of the ways of having a good time in the best way possible for me. I prefer to spend my free time with the people whose company I always enjoy. I also like to spend my spare time alone, when I’m tired and haven’t got any desire to talk to anybody, very often I want to get away from noisy streets and go to the countryside and change the scenery. On the other hand I may go to different entertainment centers such as disco clubs, art centers including cinema, theatre, concerts halls, etc. There are people who want to broaden and enrich their knowledge during their free time. I’m among them; I go to the library or reading-hall where I can find a lot of books written by my favourite writers and poets. I must add that I never have enough time to enjoy reading and more often read a book or a magazine late in the evening. Or I can go to the museums and picture galleries where I can see the works of well-known painters and sculptors of all times. I don’t forget the computer – my greatest helper in searching for knowledge. If you want to be strong and healthy, go in for sports. There are many sports clubs, swimming-pools, gymnasiums and sport grounds for everybody who loves sports. Sport will make you not only healthier and stronger, but kinder, more sociable, cheerful and even wiser. Sport will give you its strength and energy and you’ll become a greater admirer of life with all its problems and wonders. (As for me I ...) Moreover, there are a lot of people, who prefer less energetic activities, such as chess, cards, crosswords. And don’t forget about hobbies. You should have at least one, it’ll help you to relax, dream and enjoy lifer. There are so many hobbies to choose: painting, computer programming, photography, fishing, gardening, cooking, walking, learning languages, collecting something and what not. It’s a pleasure to see lots of things made with your own hands, to look through a large collection of old and rare coins, books or stamps, to present your friends with the pictures and drawings created by yourself, to amuse everyone with your green winter garden at home. So, look around more carefully and you’ll find your own and the only one (or even more). Hobbies give people moments of pride and excitement but take a lot of time, energy and even money. Tastes differ and if you have chosen a hobby according to your character and taste you are lucky. (So my hobby is ...) Travelling is also a good way to spend my spare time. Visiting new places, seeing sights and meeting new people is a very exciting and useful relaxation. I can go hiking. In summer I like to be outdoors from morning till night, sunbathing, walking barefoot on the grass. My family or my friends are the very people to go with to the riverbank, to the forest or to the seashore. It's really wonderful to put up a tent, make a fire and spend time in a picturesque place. People are dreamers, our dreams are different but each person chooses his own way of spending free time, either passive or active. In any case leisure should be refreshment and a source of inspiration.
