The action takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where the unknown after a global catastrophe in the former North America formed a totalitarian state Panem (English. Panem). Its capital is located in the Capitol, the Rocky Mountain region who shared once the United States and Canada, and around it are concentrated twelve (originally thirteen) districts - districts that supply capital varied raw materials. Very characteristic described class division Panem: wealthy residents of the Capitol shikuyut due to the poor, the hungry and the oppressed people of districts (and not all, of what the situation is more acute). About 74 years ago by the events described in the novel, this state of affairs disgruntled residents of District 13-revolted. Rebellion was brutally suppressed, District officially destroyed, and the memory of it (and as a warning to other districts) Capitol hosts the annual entertainment event - The Hunger Games [30].
