_ Ireland is one of the two large islands of the British Isles. It is surrounded on the north, west and south by the Atlantic Ocean. Irish mountains are low; the highest, _ Carrantuohill, is only 3414 feet high. The most important river is the Shannon. Most of the island is occupied by the Irish Republic. The capital of the country is _ Dublin situated on the banks of the Liffey. _ Dublin is an attractive city, with wide streets and squares. The city spreads out in all directions, even to the northernmost foothills of the Wicklow Mountains. _ Dublin is the home of the oldest university in _ Ireland, _ Trinity College, founded in 1591. The National University of _ Ireland is also located in _ Dublin, as are important libraries, galleries, museums and theatres like the Irish Literary Theatre or the Abbey Theatre.
